Calling all Local Businesses, Farmers and Community Groups
The Dolmens Climate Action Network is hosting an information and discussion workshop on 2nd December in the Burrendale, bringing together local businesses, landowners, organisations and community leaders to help shape the community’s Energy Master Plan and define its goals. The project aims to create long-term community benefits by supporting local energy generation, with profits reinvested back into the area.
This ambitious, community-led initiative will be funded through a combination of community investment and potential grant aid, delivered in partnership with a host organisation/s. Participating organisations can benefit from reduced running costs, improved environmental credentials and the knowledge that any profits generated will be reinvested locally to support further renewable energy development. This work is part of the Sustainable Energy Communities Northern Ireland Programme, led by Advice NI and funded by the National Lottery Climate Fund.
“This isn’t a new concept,” said Michael Donnelly from Dolmens Climate Action Network. “There are numerous examples in the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain.”
“Locally, we are working with Action Renewables, who are mapping how energy is currently used in the areas of Slieve Croob and Mourne, and exploring new community-owned options for generating it — from solar power and battery storage to other renewable technologies”.
“We’re looking to engage with businesses that have roof space such as workshops, factories, warehouses or shops, as well as farmers with land, barns or outbuildings suitable for solar panels,” said Michael Donnelly. “Community halls, sports clubs, churches, schools and other local facilities are also ideal. .” “If you haven’t received an invitation and would like to learn more please contact Action Renewables at arconsultancy@actionrenewables.co.uk”
“But we also want to understand the energy environment within these organisations through a very short survey, helping us identify opportunities for renewable energy generation, reducing energy costs, and securing future funding support.”
By completing the short survey, you’ll help us:
- Map local energy use and generation potential
- Identify rooftops, fields and buildings suitable for solar or battery storage
- Shape a community-led plan that keeps the value of local energy within the Mournes and Slieve Croob area
- Strengthen future funding bids and pilot projects that could directly benefit local enterprises and groups
As part of the initiative, five local businesses or community organisations will be selected to receive a free detailed energy audit, including an updated Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) worth £3,000.
