Community Resilience for Extreme Weather
In response to the challenges we faced during Storm Eowyn, the Dolmens Climate Action Network is hosting an engaging and proactive discussion on black-out survival strategies, alternative energy solutions and strengthening community resilience.
During the last storm, we saw a largely reactive response. Now, as a community, we have the opportunity to turn that experience into a positive, forward-thinking conversation. Let’s come together to share insights on what worked, what didn’t, and what essential items every home should have to weather the next storm.
Stronger Together
“When extreme weather hits, the strength of our community can make all the difference. By connecting with our neighbours now—before a crisis—we can build the networks and plans that will help us all stay safe and resilient.”
Who might need extra help in a storm or heatwave? Where can we turn for support if the power goes out? How can we share resources to get through difficult times together? The time to ask these questions is now, not when an emergency is already unfolding.
Innovative solutions from our community
Ingenuity and innovation was forced on many of us who were plunged into darkness for days. We’ll be sharing real-life experiences and creative solutions that helped people navigate days without power, WiFi, or hot water. Your stories, favourite survival gadgets, and practical hacks are all welcome!
Cooking without electricity: One resident, missing their toaster, was surprised to learn you can make toast—and even cheese toasties—directly on a gas hob! Another shared how they made pizza with just a frying pan.
Lighting up the darkness: Beyond candles, some found that simple battery-powered pull-up lanterns provided great illumination for cooking and moving around safely. “I bought these online, and they’re fantastic,” one person said. “They even have magnets so I could attach them to the cooker hood and see what I was doing.”
Backup power options: While some turned to traditional generators, others explored the potential of using electric vehicles as home power sources—though not all EVs are equipped for this function.
Just a few ideas – but what did you use/have/want? Please join us so we can write a brilliant, innovative list of ‘must haves’ and ‘how to get by with no power!’
